In this episode we talk about both dealing with people much larger than you and tips on proper training etiquette when you are the bigger person.
I’ve spent a lot of time avoiding the big people in Jiu Jitsu. I figured that all things being equal, a big or exceptionally strong person in Jiu Jitsu is far more likely to hurt me than someone of equal or smaller size.
After spending some good old fashioned quality time over the phone with Kroyler I have come to realize the errors of my ways… basically that it’s not a size issue, rather it’s a quality of training partners issue.
Not only that, but at a certain level you should be able to defeat a big strong person in Jiu Jitsu… otherwise what exactly is the point of Jiu Jitsu…?
On the other hand, if you are a bigger person in Jiu Jitsu you should learn how to roll with your smaller counterparts in a way that will be beneficial to both of you. Use your weight or strength advantage sure, but only just so much as is required. There is no need to go full hulk on someone half your size even if they are substantially better than you.
In this episode we even brought on our resident big guy, Larry to have an opinion that actually matters on this particular show. He was fun to have on as a guest host and very insightful as well.
